This week was back to school for my oldest son, and it was his first time in public school and my first time as a public school parent. I taught second grade for several years, and now I spend lots of time in classrooms mentoring the next generation of teachers. So, I know the routine, but I still can’t help feeling all sentimental as I get ready to put my first born on the school bus.
I’ll wonder…Is he having a good day? Does he think the book he is reading is hard? Is he making friends?
In Kindergarten, my husband and I started leaving notes for our child in his lunch box. On special occasions we jazz up his lunch as a surprise to let him know we are thinking of him. We’ll continue the tradition this year to mark special occasions – the first day of school, holidays, and accomplishments.
When Nature’s Harvest® contacted me about making a creative lunch for my son using their bread, I jumped at the chance. We have used Nature’s Harvest® for the boys’ sandwiches for some time now, and we love that it contains whole grains and is void of artificial flavors/colors and does not contain high fructose corn syrup.
I am already thinking about some of the fun ways I can decorate Bud’s lunches for school this Fall. For a Halloween lunch, I will make this Spider Web Sandwich by piping Nutella onto a slice of Nature’s Harvest® Honey Wheat made with whole grain bread.
Nature’s Harvest® is encouraging parents to have a little whole grain fun with their kid’s lunches this fall with their Nature’s Harvest Back to School Sandwich Art Contest. Parents can visit the Nature’s Harvest® Bread Facebook page and submit a a photo of their sandwich art creations for the chance to win prizes. One grand prize winner will be announced in September and will receive a “Kitchen Crash” from Celebrity Chef and contest judge, Kelsey Nixon. Kelsey will judge the top 10 Semi-Finalist entries based on visual appeal, creativity, and incorporation of nutritious ingredients.
