My older son is obsessed with this Disney Cars themed wall clock that came free with his Cars 2 movie a few Christmases ago…
I, on the other hand, am not in love with it. While I love, love, love the Cars characters as much as my sons, I am NOT a big fan of home decor and party decorations that are based on popular characters…I know, I am so not the cool mom. For some reason, when I try to display these types of commercial products, they always come across as tacky…so I just avoid them at all costs. This Lightning McQueen clock has been the exception in our house, until I moved the boys into their beach-themed bedroom.
Under no circumstances was this clock coming into the new room as is.
I wasn’t sure if I could dismantle this plastic clock, but I found that there were little plastic knobs holding the clear, plastic face onto the frame. I found that by using a small flat tool (I used the head of a small, flathead screwdriver), I was able to pop off the face of the clock relatively easily.
In order to make a new (room-theme acceptable) clock from this existing one, I cut a piece of blue paper in a circle the size of the existing Lightning McQueen background. Using a light blue colored pencil, I drew waves on the blue circle. I cut a slit in the circle so I could slide on the new background without having to take apart the clock hands (because who KNOWS if I would have gotten those back together right!). I used some thin jute rope to trim the inside edge of the clock to give it a nautical feel, and then I added some sand and shells from a recent beach visit before snapping the plastic clock face back in place.
In under 10 minutes and for no cost (I used items from around the house), my boys have a new wall clock that they love and I don’t have commercial characters invading my space. Win, win!
