When we moved into our house, all the fixtures were brass. My house, while clean and generally updated, still screamed “Hi! I got stuck in the 70’s” because each door had a tacky brass handle attached.
You know, some people spray paint their knobs.
I am not that person. Besides the labor involved in painting them the color I wanted, I have 3 boys. NOTHING in my house goes unscathed when they are playing…so there was no way they were going to maintain their pristine paint job for long.
I sat on the knob issue for a long time.
The brass (un)beauties really bothered me, but I couldn’t make a move….
…until I spotted these lovelies on the now defunct Young House Love (don’t start, I might cry).
I needed these knobs.
A couple of clicks later, a 22-pound box of oil-rubbed bronze hardware was on its way to my doorstep.
My husband looked at me like I was crazy, and I promised to install them all on my own – which I did for the most part (except the one day where the baby was being a scene and he decided putting on door knobs was the lesser of the 2 evils).
I put the knobs with the plates behind them on the main doors (bedrooms, hall bath), with just knobs on the closets and master bath. I think the knobs change the whole look of the house, instantly updating it.
What do you think? Was my cheap and easy update worth the effort?
