I am all kinds of “nautical inspired” lately as I get together “beachy” accessories for my boys’ Key West themed boys bedroom.
Before I show you today’s project, I have to say that I had to chuckle when a YEAR after I mentioned that this would be the theme for (at the time) my younger son’s bedroom, Pottery Barn comes out with a summer line of bedding with – you guessed it! – a Key West theme. That’s sort of random, right? I mean, I can’t imagine “The Rock” was a super-popular kids’ bedroom design – especially since KW is a town more known for margaritas than for much else. I highly doubt that Pottery Barn Kids’ creative team was trolling Diapered Daze and Knights for inspiration, so I am just going to take this as coincidence and pat myself on the back that one of my favorite stores also thinks my idea is stylish.
For the boys’ room, I want to have a place to display some of my favorite pictures of them together. I’ve tried to keep the theme a bit subdued, so I thought a white and navy striped frame might give off the vibe I was looking for without screaming tropical or beach.
I started with an IKEA Ram 4″ x 6″ Photo Frame. They are sold in sets of 3 for less than $5 total. Yep. A total steal. Since they are unfinished, they make it really easy to alter.
Using painters’ tape, I blocked off stripes of different sizes. I painted the white first (using acrylic paint from the craft store) so the navy paint would easily cover up any “mistakes”.
After the white paint dried, I put more tape down to block off the white and painted my navy stripes. After the paint dried and the tape was removed, I painted on two layers of Mod Podge to seal the frame and give it a little sheen.
It looks great and will look even better when I print a coordinating picture of the boys to finish it off!
