My mom recognized my tendencies for anxiety – particularly performance anxiety – early on in my life. The first time I remember her talking to me about it was in second grade after I had received my scores back on the IOWA Test of Basic Skills. I had earned a score in the 99th percentile on study skills, but only the low- or mid- 90’s on reading and math. I was devastated. This was the first time I remember mom talking me off the ledge (figuratively) about an academic matter.
It certainly was not the last time.
She encouraged me to take a non-honors math course in high school so that it would be less stressful.
When I considered applying to an Ivy league college, she asked me, “Do you want to be average at an Ivy or a top student somewhere else?” I didn’t even apply to the Ivy league school and the scholars program I was given the opportunity to participate in at my big state school was the most rewarding educational experience of my life.
When I hit a roadblock in my Ph.D. dissertation and wanted to throw my hands up and quit, she said, “Just sleep on it.” The next morning I woke up and knew the answer to my (super tiny) problem.
As I have gotten older and now have my own family, I find it easier to manage anxiety-producing situations. I’ll often remember her reminders that big problems today are usually much smaller than you thought in hindsight. She taught me to worry about myself and my happiness instead of always trying to compare myself to others’ performances.
Like my mom’s important advice about living a healthy, happy, and stress-free lifestyle, Nestlé® Pure Life® Hydration movement is encouraging us to be healthier this year by swapping out one sugary drink a day with water to save approximately 50,000 calories this year. Its crazy how those calories add up, right?
Since I am expecting Baby #3 later this year, this seemed a good time for me to take the pledge. Will you join me? Visit Nestlé® Pure Life® Facebook Page to take the pledge, share your own wisdom about staying healthy and the importance of hydration, and enter to win prizes.
