…and she is EXACTLY who I needed to deal with this evening (sense the sarcasm?). The day started off a bit rough, as Buddy decided he would rather play with his grandparents than go to school today. So, he screamed in protest all the way to school. He chilled out when he saw the two guinea pigs, though, and was eager to tell them that he saw a groundhog on the way to school. He emerged from school nearly 3 hours later, all smiles. When asked what his favorite part of the day was, he responded, “I got to wash my hands – TWICE.” (Really???? You read books, fingerpainted, played outside, and sang songs and you liked washing your hands the best?? Sometimes I wonder about you, sweetie.)
He refused a nap this afternoon, and by 6 PM I was pretty certain that I was going to lose my mind. So, we started the going bed routine a few minutes early. Once in bed, Buddy continued his devilish streak and threw all of his books and his binky behind his bed. Yelling at me, “Moooommmmmmmy! My Binka!” a full-on tantrum was brewing.
Since there was no way I could reach the binky or the books, I explained to him that the Binky Fairy was going to keep an eye on his binky tonight, to see if a big boy like him still needed to use one or not. He responded, “Okay, Mommy!” and laid down. I thought, “Score! I got off easy here!” and started to leave the room when he said, “Hows ’bout car binka?” (Before he turned 1, we had a binky we kept in the car for emergencies. He hasn’t seen that thing in over a year. How he remembered it, I have no idea.)
Next to his love affair with binkys, transportation, and giraffes, the only other thing he obsesses about is donkeys (Again, weird, I know. But we have donkeys down the street, so it is not sooo weird). I brought out an old Eeyore stuffed animal and said, “The Binky Fairy wants to know if you will keep her friend the donkey safe tonight while she keeps your binky safe.” He agreed and had me tuck them both in, introduced him to giraffe, and then proceeded to scream in agony for the next half hour.
And then he fell asleep. Day 1 of Operation Binky is complete and a success, even if it was unplanned, traumatic, and a bit devious.
I think I need a glass of wine. Sigh.
