My littlest had his first birthday this month. With winter weather upon us here in the Northeast, we decided to host a winter-themed first birthday party. We created a woodland winter wonderland party complete with festive woodland decor. It was important to us that we didn’t host a “Christmas” party – we’d be doing that a few weeks later – so we did our best to keep it more winter woodlands and less winter Christmas.

In my opinion, it is the little details that make a party memorable and special. I created this fox tail and onesie for my cute little fox, using some materials that Silhouette surprised me with earlier this Fall.

I started with a plain gray onesie on clearance from Carters (total cost: $3). I like using the Carter’s onesies for these projects because they fit well and have no logos on them.

The fox is a shape from the Silhouette Design store layered in solid heat transfer vinyl (HTV) and the name, fox nose, and fox eyes are cut from Silhouette’s black, flocked heat transfer vinyl. I really enjoyed working with the flocked vinyl. I had never used it before and I loved the texture and dimension it gave the shirt.

I also made him a little tail, which he (surprisingly) loved wearing. The boy won’t wear hats or socks, but he’ll wear a tail. Go figure.

For the tail, I cut some orange craft fur and white craft fur (found online for about $2 each). I loosely used this tutorial from BITS, but I sewed the tail together because the glue wasn’t working for me. I learned that craft fur is extremely easy to sew, so once I laid out the pieces (fur side in) and pinned them, it only took me a minute to sew it together, stuff it with fluff, and hand sew the top opening. I used a safety pin to attach the tail to the baby – and off he went!
